Once I've gone through this piano lessons course, how far can I take this technique?
As with most things in life, this really depends on you, the piano lessons student. Because this piano lessons technique is open-ended, there really is no musical glass ceiling for you to run into. As I've mentioned in earlier pages, we spend a great amount of time in the piano lessons course teaching the piano student to develop their own unique Rhythmic Patterns, which can then be mixed and matched on the piano as they play to create their own unique musical style! Again, this is not "rote" learning, where I'm expecting you to simply mimic me as I play the piano. Of course at the beginning of the piano lessons course you'll imitate what I'm playing almost exactly. But because my intention is to encourage your musical creativity, you'll soon be creating your own musical patterns as you learn to play the piano by ear... with your own unique musical style!
We have students who are playing piano at a very high level who have learned to play the piano using the rhythmic patterns technique. Many of these came up through our online piano lessons and are now playing professionally in clubs, jazz gigs, churches, accompanying choirs, creating and publishing their own music on iTunes, teaching music in schools, etc. It's a fantastic thing to be involved in!
How was this piano lessons course developed?
Playing the piano by ear is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I find that I'm doing it quite frequently. I'm involved in playing with a lot of different musical groups as well as playing many solo gigs on piano. Back when I was teaching piano locally, and my piano lessons students would hear me play it would generally cause them to ask me that dreaded question again and again: "How can I learn to play piano by ear?".
Because I knew how to play piano by ear, but had no idea at that time how to teach and pass it on, the question was a very frustrating one for me. My response was the same as the vast majority of those around the world who play piano by ear. In answer to their question I would sit down at the piano and play something by ear, and then say some crazy thing like "That's how you do it!". I knew that this was not a satisfactory answer at all, either to my piano students or to myself.
Finally I realized that I had to come up with a good answer and actually took three months off from teaching local piano lessons so that I could start developing a curriculum that would teach piano playing by ear. Since that time, I took and really developed the Rhythmic Patterns piano lessons course with my local students. Watching them grow and having something tangible to grab onto musically really stoked the fires of inspiration for me. My wife is actually the responsible party for getting me to place this piano lessons course on the Internet. On a whim, I put a webpage together and it went nuts. I don't think it had much to do with my web skills as much as it had to do with the fact that this piano lessons course fills a great need in the music community for teaching musicians to play the piano by ear.
To tell you the truth, I believe this piano lessons course was given to me by God. Now don't get weirded out by that statement. I know a lot of people say those kinds of things. The reason I say it is not because I'm some super spiritual person, but because of what I've seen happen for thousands and thousands of piano lesson students around the world when they go through this piano lesson course. Those who thought they could never play music on the piano begin sending me audio clips and e-mails as well is posting their piano compositions on YouTube. Their joy is infectious, and I believe joy is straight from God.
Through the years, teaching online piano students to play the piano and keyboard by ear has become my main teaching focus. I absolutely love it and am honored to be a part of this musical community.
