In chapter 12, we'll be taking apart a Rhythm and Blues Gospel song, note for note, analyze all the blues riffs and music theory, and then figure out how to put it all together on YOUR keyboard. This lesson is jam packed with over 20 new blues piano riffs - when you learn this many new blues riffs all at once, it can really be a challenge. However, when you learn them in the context of a song, it turns into just pure fun! Because this video is an overview of some of the highlights of chapter 12, I'll be playing a few different sample sections from the lesson: First, we'll take a look at a video of the full song used in this piano lesson - you'll be able to see all of the blues riffs that we'll be studying. In addition, you'll be able to see the solo section where we're going to be studying how to put together a keyboard solo to really rip it up when it's your turn to shine! In the full version of this lesson, there is a super-slow motion video version of the full song so you can really see exactly what's going on. And remember, once we get to the section of the lesson where we're looking at each of the blues riffs in detail, we'll study every single note in up-close slow motion. This is the lower resolution video podcast covering 'Ear Training 101'. Many musicians think that perfect pitch is the holy grail of musical abilities. Not true. Most skill musicians have a highly developed sense of "Relative Pitch". This is MUCH more valuable. Learning to incorporate ear training into your piano lessons is an absolute must for piano players. More about that later... Let's start with the definition of Perfect Pitch. The definition of Perfect Pitch is "The ability to produce or identify a tone perfectly on key without any reference to an outside source". Mumbo Jumbo? Basically, this means that those rare individuals who have perfect pitch can sing an Ab or F# in the middle of the day on a bus ride through the Bronx without hearing anybody play the note first on an instrument. Sounds like a gift... but it comes with a price: Unfortunately, those who have perfect pitch always hear everything absolutely in tune with A440 or "standard tuning". Even that sounds great until you realize that most bands or choirs are not perfectly in tune. Here's where it becomes a bummer... Let's say you have the rare gift of Perfect Pitch and you're singing in a choir. The choir is singing an accapella piece (no instruments) and as choirs tend to do, they "sag" in pitch, or slowly slip down just a little in pitch by the end of the song. If everyone in the choir "sags" together (that's a funny thing to say) then it sounds fine. But you - the one with the gift - can't "sag". What happens? By the end of the song, you are out of tune with the choir! Yep. The one with perfect pitch, singing out of tune. It's very funny. Especially to those who don't have the "gift". What about instruments? Did you know that a Piano starts to sag in pitch immediately after tuning? What happens to the Perfect Pitcher who tries to sing with that piano? No dice. And the VAST majority of Pianos are tuned a bit low. Here's the real gift... What you really want is a highly developed sense of "Relative Pitch". This is the ability to identify or produce any note perfectly in tune relative to another note. Meaning this - If I play an F# on the piano in the middle of the day on a bus traveling through the Bronx, (hmmm) tell you it was an F#, and then play a high Ab way up on the keyboard, you could immediately say "Hey, that second note is an Ab!" This is a highly useful skill! If you can do this, you have a great sense of Relative Pitch. If the choir sags, you sag along and keep on rockin' with all the relative pitches they sing. Understand? Don't be fooled by those who say "Only those with Perfect Pitch can play by ear". No way. Tell them to hit the road (in the middle of the day on a bus traveling through the Bronx). This is the lower resolution video podcast covering Chapter 3 Part 1 and 2 from 'Phat' Chord Voicings. This piano lessons chapter of the 'Phat Chord Voicings' Series is titled 'Crunch Chords'. So far in this series, we've been exploring the technique of opening up piano chords, creating 'open' voicings by taking the notes of chords and spreading them out on the piano. Today, we're going to take some of those same chords and go the opposite direction. Instead of 'opening up' the chords, and spreading them around on the piano keyboard, we'll compact the chords so that they always have at least two notes that are a whole step, or even a half-step apart on the piano. This compact voicing of the chords is why they are called 'Crunch' chords. These Crunch chords are especially effective when you need a little bit of an extra punch in your sound. For instance, when you are playing piano in a band situation, and it comes time for you to take a piano solo, change some of your chord voicings into Crunch chords and you'll be amazed at how they cut through the mix! To illustrate the use of these piano chord techniques, we've mixed together a full jazz song on the piano showing the use of the Crunch chords in the right hand. In addition, you'll see that we'll go through a detailed 'how-to' for your left hand on the piano, showing how you can take some typical descending line passages and change them into Phat Crunch chords! In this edition of the online piano lessons blues course, we're going to be looking at something called "Straight Eighths". This refers to an underlying Rock beat - which is totally different from previous editions of this blues piano course. (Earlier chapters were based on an underlying Swing beat). This underlying rock beat isn't just a little different - it completely changes the character of the music and gives it a rock flavor. Jam-packed with new musical information, this lesson details 12 new blues piano riffs for your right hand... lots of stuff to chew on! The left hand is going to study something called the "offbeat push": learning to interject offbeat rhythms into the music to really kick up the intensity of the music. Are you looking for some new uptempo techniques for your left hand on the piano? Everybody is. This is a piano lesson you've got to go through. Here's a twist - as we go through this online piano lesson, all of the blues riffs and techniques will be based on the same blues piano scale that we've studied in previous chapters. This is the higher resolution video podcast covering 'Ear Training 101'. Many musicians think that perfect pitch is the holy grail of musical abilities. Not true. Most skill musicians have a highly developed sense of "Relative Pitch". This is MUCH more valuable. Learning to incorporate ear training into your piano lessons is an absolute must for piano players. More about that later... Let's start with the definition of Perfect Pitch. The definition of Perfect Pitch is "The ability to produce or identify a tone perfectly on key without any reference to an outside source". Mumbo Jumbo? Basically, this means that those rare individuals who have perfect pitch can sing an Ab or F# in the middle of the day on a bus ride through the Bronx without hearing anybody play the note first on an instrument. Sounds like a gift... but it comes with a price: Unfortunately, those who have perfect pitch always hear everything absolutely in tune with A440 or "standard tuning". Even that sounds great until you realize that most bands or choirs are not perfectly in tune. Here's where it becomes a bummer... Let's say you have the rare gift of Perfect Pitch and you're singing in a choir. The choir is singing an accapella piece (no instruments) and as choirs tend to do, they "sag" in pitch, or slowly slip down just a little in pitch by the end of the song. If everyone in the choir "sags" together (that's a funny thing to say) then it sounds fine. But you - the one with the gift - can't "sag". What happens? By the end of the song, you are out of tune with the choir! Yep. The one with perfect pitch, singing out of tune. It's very funny. Especially to those who don't have the "gift". What about instruments? Did you know that a Piano starts to sag in pitch immediately after tuning? What happens to the Perfect Pitcher who tries to sing with that piano? No dice. And the VAST majority of Pianos are tuned a bit low. Here's the real gift... What you really want is a highly developed sense of "Relative Pitch". This is the ability to identify or produce any note perfectly in tune relative to another note. Meaning this - If I play an F# on the piano in the middle of the day on a bus traveling through the Bronx, (hmmm) tell you it was an F#, and then play a high Ab way up on the keyboard, you could immediately say "Hey, that second note is an Ab!" This is a highly useful skill! If you can do this, you have a great sense of Relative Pitch. If the choir sags, you sag along and keep on rockin' with all the relative pitches they sing. Understand? Don't be fooled by those who say "Only those with Perfect Pitch can play by ear". No way. Tell them to hit the road (in the middle of the day on a bus traveling through the Bronx). So far in this series, we've been exploring the technique of opening up piano chords, creating 'open' voicings by taking the notes of chords and spreading them out on the piano. Today, we're going to take some of those same chords and go the opposite direction. Instead of 'opening up' the chords, and spreading them around on the piano keyboard, we'll compact the chords so that they always have at least two notes that are a whole step, or even a half-step apart on the piano. This compact voicing of the chords is why they are called 'Crunch' chords. These Crunch chords are especially effective when you need a little bit of an extra punch in your sound. For instance, when you are playing piano in a band situation, and it comes time for you to take a piano solo, change some of your chord voicings into Crunch chords and you'll be amazed at how they cut through the mix! To illustrate the use of these piano chord techniques, we've mixed together a full jazz song on the piano showing the use of the Crunch chords in the right hand. In addition, you'll see that we'll go through a detailed 'how-to' for your left hand on the piano, showing how you can take some typical descending line passages and change them into Phat Crunch chords!
