What about kids and piano lessons?

Having taught for years in a local piano lessons studio my encouragement for parents has always been that kids get connected with a local piano teacher. This is because there really is no substitute for the fact that every week, your child knows that they're going to play the piano for someone, so they had better practice! :) Having said that, I always encourage parents to have their kids go through our course titled "Pattern Piano and Keyboard" in addition to their local piano lessons. Why? The simple fact is that there are very few piano teachers who teach anything other than learning to read music from a page. This isn't because local piano teachers are trying to withhold the skill of learning to play the piano by ear, it's simply because they don't have a curriculum that teaches this skill step-by-step on the piano. If you're familiar with standard piano lessons, you know that learning to read music and walking through the standard piano lesson books is the name of the game. Reading music is a valuable skill, but it is not the only skill that produces a well rounded, creative musician who will get the most enjoyment from playing the piano all of their life.

Piano players who get lifelong satisfaction are able to not only read written sheet music but also to play any song on the piano by ear without the need for written sheet music. This leads to musical creativity, whether the piano student is creating arrangements of existing songs or composing their own music. Creativity to a musician is like fresh air. Without it, piano lessons and music in general begins to stagnate, and the piano lesson student quickly loses interest.

Frequently, parents who have kids and piano lessons will e-mail us. Because the vast majority of piano lesson teachers don't teach the skills of playing piano or keyboard by ear, many parents get frustrated. They'll write to us and say that they're considering pulling their children out of local piano lessons and have them begin studying through our online piano lessons course instead. I always respond that it's much better if they can keep their children involved with a local piano teacher and then supplement their musical studies with this piano lessons course.

I really wasn't trying to discourage parents from having their kids take piano lessons, I was trying to make a point that kids are pretty flaky! If you've got teenagers, you know that's an understatement. There will be times when your kids are really interested in music and piano lessons, and then the next week they'll decide they'd like to become an astronaut. It's pretty natural, but as a parent if you want to give your kids the lifelong ability to play the piano, you have to be the one that provides the consistency. My folks used to let me take summers off from piano lessons and that seemed to be just about the right amount of time so that when the fall came, I was ready to dig in on the piano again.

Are these piano lessons appropriate for homeschool students?

Absolutely. We have quite a few homeschool teenage students who are digging into this online piano lessons course and have had great success with it.
