To begin, make sure you go through the online piano course found here.  Titled "Pattern Piano and Keyboard", this music course is designed for anyone in the following groups:

1) Piano lessons students who are brand-new to music
2) Piano students who took piano lessons as a child and now are returning to the piano (maybe after many years!)
3) Pianists who have played for many years, but I've always had to rely on sheet music and now would like to be a will to break free from written music and play any song on the piano and keyboard by ear

If you fall within any of these groups, the course titled "Pattern Piano and Keyboard" is ideal for you.  The first 20 minutes of the course will outline the basic components of music theory, how intervals are built and then are used to put chords together.  From there, we'll didn't ride into playing music on the piano.

Using the powerful technique of "rhythmic patterns", you learn to break up any musical chord into a rhythmically interesting pattern on the piano, and then simply played this rhythmic pattern over every chord in your first simple song.  Even though you're just beginning, there is a beauty to your playing because you're not just pounding out the chords. By breaking up all of these chords into rhythmically interesting patterns, you develop a fantastic musical palette of sound quickly.

In the second song of the course, you learn a new simple rhythmic pattern.  However, this time will alternate the first rhythmic pattern that you learned with this new rhythmic pattern.  Suddenly, you got a whole new texture to the music, and it's still very simple to play.

You can see where we're going with this - by the end of the piano lessons course, you'll have gained an entire arsenal of musical patterns that you can mix and match in any way that you'd like, to create your own unique sound on the piano.  This is the key to playing piano by ear.
